How many feeder insects or food packages should you buy?

Our reptile feeder and food planner helps you estimate consumption for your chosen period, subtract food already on hand, and work out how many whole packages to buy. We have included separate sections for feeder insects, rodents, prepared gecko diet, and greens or vegetables.

How do you plan food for your collection?

1. Choose a planning period in weeks or months and an optional percentage buffer.
2. Add an item in the relevant food section. Enter the animal count, your established serving amount, and feeding frequency. Use separate rows for groups with different needs.
3. Enter package quantity, price, and current inventory in the units shown. For prepared gecko diet, use your actual serving and powder-to-water information.
4. Review estimated consumption, need after inventory, packages to buy, and purchase cost.

How are feeder quantities and costs calculated?

For insects fed a set number of times per week, weekly demand = animals × feeders per animal per feeding × feedings per week. The planner extends demand across the selected period, adds any buffer, subtracts inventory, and rounds the remaining amount up to whole packages. Prorated food value measures the cost of the amount consumed; purchase cost measures the packages you need to order now.

Worked example: a four-week feeder order

For an arithmetic example, select 4 weeks with a 0% buffer. Add an insect item with 10 animals, 3 feeders per animal per feeding, and 2 feedings per week. Enter 40 feeders on hand, packages of 100, and an example price of $12 per package. These quantities illustrate the calculation, not a feeding recommendation.

Demand is 30 feeders per feeding, 60 per week, and 240 for four weeks. After subtracting the 40 on hand, you need 200 more: two packages costing $24. The food consumed has a prorated value of $28.80 because consumption includes the inventory you already owned.

What assumptions should you check?

The tool uses the feeding amounts and schedules you enter; it does not choose diet, prey size, or nutritional requirements. Months use 365.25 ÷ 12 days, and every-N-days schedules are averages rather than dated feeding calendars. Account for losses with the buffer and any relevant purchasing costs with the entered package price. Current plans are saved in this browser.
