How much substrate do you need for your reptile enclosure?
Our substrate calculator helps you work out how much material you need from the inside footprint and your chosen substrate depth. We have included options for multiple enclosures, an extra or settling allowance, a separate drainage layer, and a custom mix with component quantities and purchasing estimates.
How do you calculate substrate volume?
- Choose inches or centimeters. Enter the inside usable length and width, substrate depth, and number of enclosures.
- Set any extra or settling allowance. If you need a drainage layer, enable it and enter its depth separately.
- Choose an editable mix template or enter your own components. Percentages are by volume and must total 100%.
- For purchasing estimates, enter each component’s bag size, bag unit, and price. Review required amounts, whole bags, cost, and leftovers.
How does the substrate calculation work?
Base volume = inside length × inside width × substrate depth × enclosure count. The extra allowance increases the substrate mix volume; it does not increase the drainage layer. Each component receives its entered percentage of the mix. Bags round up to whole containers. Match the bag unit carefully: US dry quarts and US gallons are different volume measures.
Worked example: a 36 × 18-inch footprint
Enter 36 inches long, 18 inches wide, 4 inches of substrate, one enclosure, a 10% allowance, and no drainage layer. The base volume is 2,592 cubic inches, or 1.50 ft³. With the allowance, the required mix is 1.65 ft³, approximately 46.7 liters.
Using the illustrative Soil / sand / clay example at 60% / 30% / 10%, this becomes 0.990 ft³ of topsoil, 0.495 ft³ of washed sand, and 0.165 ft³ of clay. The mix and depth demonstrate the arithmetic; they are not species-specific recommendations.
What assumptions should you check?
The calculator assumes a rectangular footprint and uniform depth. Large furnishings, slopes, and material compaction can change the actual amount used. Choose your own appropriate depth and materials. Blank bag information produces an incomplete purchase estimate; a displayed $0.00 does not mean the materials are free.
